Operational Excellence

Every day, millions of people rely on rail infrastructure built on Pandrol products. We take that responsibility incredibly seriously – it drives everything we do.

The Pandrol Excellence System brings safety, quality and continuous improvement together into one way of working, helping us build a stronger, more reliable foundation for the networks you depend on.

What is the Pandrol Excellence System?

The Pandrol Excellence System, PES, is how we turn our strategy into everyday practice on the ground. Rather than treating operational excellence as a manufacturing initiative alone, PES is designed to reach every area and level of our organisation, from the shop floor through to the boardroom.

PES focuses on optimising how we work, eliminating waste, and building a culture where continuous improvement is second nature rather than an occasional project. It gives every colleague, from operators to engineers, a stake in identifying and solving problems, creating a more connected, more responsive organisation that keeps pace with what our customers need.

How we build a culture of excellence

01

Eliminating Waste Together

We train colleagues at every level to identify and eliminate waste from our processes using lean manufacturing tools, creating safer, more efficient and better organised workplaces across our sites. Structured challenges, including our TIM WOODS waste-chasing initiative, help teams spot inefficiency early and act on it before it becomes costly.

02

Right First Time, Every Time

We manufacture according to demand rather than to stock, using just-in-time principles that reduce inventory and lead times without compromising reliability. Combined with strict quality standards maintained throughout the value stream, this keeps our products consistent and our customers fully supported.

03

Listening to Our People

Continuous improvement works best when everyone has a voice. We involve colleagues at every level, from operator to engineer, in diagnosing problems and shaping solutions. This creates a more fluid, connected way of working that benefits from diverse perspectives.

Safety is the foundation

Workplace safety culture sits at the heart of everything PES represents. We hold ourselves to a single ambition: Zero Preventable Harm. This is more than just a target, it’s a way of working that protects our people and partners while strengthening reliability across our operations. Our Golden Rules set out the non-negotiable standards that guide behaviour on every site, reinforced by every stakeholder. Moving beyond regulatory compliance, we treat safety as a strategic driver of performance rather than a box to tick.

  • Zero Preventable Harm guides every task, on every site, for every colleague and partner we work with.

  • Golden Rules set clear, non-negotiable standards for safe behaviour, reinforced by every stakeholder, every day.

  • Half the world's rail networks trust Pandrol products, built on a consistent record of safety performance.

  • Safety is treated as a strategic driver of performance, not simply a compliance requirement to be met.

Rolling out across our global network

PES began its journey at four sites: Worksop, Raismes, Memphis and Raipur. Starting with foundational tools and methods, including 5S methodology training, each site is building toward a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence. From here, PES is expanding gradually across our wider manufacturing network, with the intention of applying the same standards and mindset everywhere Pandrol operates.
